Coffee grounds removes carpet odors

My brother, Jerry is in the carpet business and he and his wife are full of information about cleaning carpets. They live in Tennessee which is a good distance from Florida, needless to say. I wish they lived closer because they are both so fun to be around but also because I could get some good deals on carpet for my place. lol

Teenie, his wife is the one who told me how great Windex works to take stains out of carpet. Just spray it on and then dab the stain out.

Jerry and Teenie rented a house and the previous renters had a pet. The house had an odor when the house was closed up all day. Teenie sprinkled fresh coffee grounds (not used) on her carpet before she went to bed and then vacuumed it up the following morning. It absorbs the odor like baking soda does. Now I wouldn’t suggest you do this to a light colored carpet. Just make sure no one tracks across the floor with wet shoes or anything. You don’t want to stain your carpet with coffee stains. Her carpet was a darker color and again, she put it down during the night (or you could sprinkle it down right before you left out for your work day).

I would much rather smell coffee than a lot of other odors. In downtown Jacksonville, Florida there is a Maxwell House factory. When I go downtown with my husband, we often smell the aroma of the beans being roasted (I guess). MMMMMM…

Thanks Sandra. My son got this blog up and running for me. It has been fun for me and the kids appreciate the recipes being written down.

I have been rather lazy lately about writing but I am determined to start writing down the many ideas that pop into my head. My husband is a wealth of ideas, too.

Coffee is a great idea! My toddler once got air sick during a flight and I was so embarrassed. We changed her real quick and the crew sprinkled coffee powder on her seat and below. Worked like magic for smells.

I know this post is old but thanks so much for posting this. I had spilled water on my carpet in the spare bedroom a few weeks ago and dried it the best I could with a towel. I forgot about it until I went in there today and smelled mildew. I looked up carpet deodorizing methods until I could rent a rug doctor and poured baking soda all over as suggested and after a few hours I could still smell the mildew. I thought about other methods and googled coffee grounds, because I heard wet coffee grounds help deodorize other things but wondered how dry coffee grounds would work on carpet and found your post! Poured it on top of the baking soda and used a piece of cardboard to spread it around. Got pretty strong after a few minutes and after 20 minutes I vacuumed the baking soda and coffee grounds and wow, I think the baking soda helped clean my carpet to look like new but now my room smells like a coffee house lol. Then vacuumed a few times and now the mildew smell is gone and just a faint smell of coffee in the carpet. We’ll see how long it lasts, thanks for your help for immediate relief!
